William the Conqueror
1028-1087
Becoming the first Norman King of England and changing English history forever
Early Life
William was born around 1028 in Normandy, a region in what is now France. As a child, he was known as William the Bastard because his parents were not married, which made his early life dangerous and challenging.
Even though his childhood was difficult, William grew up strong and determined. He had to learn quickly how to survive, lead others, and protect his lands.
Becoming a Leader
William became the Duke of Normandy in 1035 when he was still a young child. Many nobles did not think he should rule, and several rebellions broke out against him.
Over time, William proved himself through bravery, patience, and smart decisions. He gained loyal followers who helped him become a powerful and respected leader.
The Journey to England
In 1066, William believed he had a right to be King of England. He gathered an army and crossed the sea to England in ships.
That same year, William won an important battle near a town called Hastings. Because of this victory, he became King of England and earned the name "William the Conqueror."
King of England
As king, William worked to take control of his new country. In 1086, he ordered a great survey called the Domesday Book, which listed land, homes, animals, and resources across England.
This book helped William understand his kingdom, collect taxes, and manage his lands. Parts of the Domesday Book still exist today.
Legacy
William ruled England until his death in 1087. He changed Englandโs rulers, land ownership, castles, and even parts of the language, and many of these changes lasted for hundreds of years.
Today, William the Conqueror is remembered as a strong and determined leader who shaped English history.
