Michael Faraday

Michael Faraday

1791-1867

Discovering how electricity and magnetism work together and helping create electric motors

Early Life

Michael Faraday was born in London, England, in 1791. His family was not rich, and Michael had very little schooling as a child. He was curious, kind, and loved learning, even when books were hard to find.

When he was a teenager, Michael worked as a bookbinderโ€™s apprentice. While binding books, he secretly read them! Many of these books were about science, and they sparked his imagination.

Learning Science

Michael taught himself by reading and doing simple experiments at home. He took careful notes and asked lots of questions. His big chance came when he attended lectures by a famous scientist named Humphry Davy.

Michael wrote detailed notes from the lectures and sent them to Davy. Davy was impressed and hired Michael as his assistant. This job opened the door to a life of science.

Amazing Discoveries

Michael Faraday made many important discoveries about electricity and magnetism. He found that moving magnets could make electricity flow. This idea is called electromagnetic induction.

His discovery helped lead to electric generators, which make the electricity we use in homes and schools today. Michael also helped invent early electric motors, showing that electricity could create motion.

A Great Teacher

Michael loved sharing science with others. He gave fun and clear talks at the Royal Institution in London. His Christmas Lectures were made especially for young people and are still given today.

He believed science should be for everyone, not just experts. Michael explained big ideas using simple words and exciting experiments.

Character and Legacy

Even though he became very famous, Michael stayed humble and kind. He turned down honors and titles because he preferred a simple life. He cared more about learning and helping others than about fame.

Today, Michael Faraday is remembered as one of the greatest scientists ever. His work helped shape the modern world and shows how curiosity and hard work can change lives.
