Early Life

James Abram Garfield was born on November 19, 1831, in a small log cabin in Ohio. His family was poor, and his father passed away when James was very young. Even though life was hard, James loved learning and believed education could change his future.

As a boy, James worked many jobs to help his family. He was a farm worker, a carpenter, and even a canal boat driver. No matter how busy he was, he always found time to read books and study.

Love of Learning

James worked very hard to go to school and eventually attended college. He became an excellent student and later became a teacher and a school leader. He enjoyed teaching others and believed that knowledge was one of the greatest gifts a person could have.

Because he was so smart and dedicated, James became a college president while he was still a young man. This was a big achievement and showed how much people respected him.

Political Career

James A. Garfield later entered politics to help make his country better. He served in the U.S. Congress for many years. People admired him because he was honest, thoughtful, and cared about fairness.

In 1880, James was elected the 20th President of the United States. He believed that government jobs should be given to people who were qualified, not just friends or supporters. This idea helped improve how the government worked.

Time as President

James A. Garfield’s time as president was short, but his ideas were important. He supported education for all children and believed that everyone deserved a fair chance to succeed.

Sadly, President Garfield became very ill after being attacked by a man while in office. He passed away in 1881. People across the country were very sad, and many honored him for his honesty and kindness.
