Early Life
Chester Alan Arthur was born on October 5, 1829, in a small town called Fairfield, Vermont. His father was a preacher, which meant the family moved often. Because of this, Chester learned to adapt to new places and people from a young age.
He was a good student and enjoyed reading and learning. Chester worked hard and earned money by teaching school before going to college. These early experiences helped him become responsible and confident.
Education and Early Career
Chester went to Union College in New York and graduated with strong grades. After college, he studied law and became a lawyer. He worked in New York City, where he learned a lot about how government and business worked.
As a lawyer, Chester believed in fairness and justice. He also became interested in politics, which is the way people work together to run a country.
Becoming President
Chester A. Arthur became Vice President of the United States in 1881. Sadly, President James A. Garfield was assassinated later that year. This meant Chester had to step in and become President.
