Early Life
Catherine the Great was born in 1729 in Stettin, a town in Prussia (a German-speaking part of Europe at the time, now Szczecin, Poland). Her name at birth was Sophie. She loved reading books and learning new ideas. Even as a child, she was curious about the world and enjoyed studying history and languages.
When Sophie was a teenager, she moved to Russia to marry a future ruler, Peter. She worked very hard to learn the Russian language and understand the country’s customs. Over time, she became known for her intelligence and strong will.
Becoming Empress
In 1762, Sophie became Empress of Russia and took the name Catherine. She became empress after her husband, Peter III, was removed from power. This was a very important role, and many people watched to see what kind of leader she would be.
