Nicolaus Copernicus
1473-1543
He proposed that Earth and the other planets move around the Sun.
Early Life
Nicolaus Copernicus was born in 1473 in the city of Toruń, in what is now Poland. As a child, he was curious and loved learning about numbers, nature, and the sky.
His father died when Copernicus was young, and his uncle helped take care of him and made sure he received a good education. This support allowed Copernicus to attend excellent schools and study many subjects.
Learning and Studies
Copernicus studied at universities in Poland and Italy. He learned math, astronomy, medicine, and even law.
He enjoyed watching the stars and planets at night. Using simple tools and careful notes, he tried to understand how the sky really worked.
A Big New Idea
At the time, most people believed that Earth was the center of the universe. Copernicus noticed that this idea did not always match what he saw in the sky.
He came up with a brave new idea: the Sun is at the center, and Earth moves around it. This is called the heliocentric model, which means “Sun-centered.”
Sharing His Discovery
Copernicus spent many years checking his math and observations. He wanted to be very sure before telling others.
Near the end of his life, he published a book explaining his ideas. The book helped other scientists think differently and ask new questions about space.
Life Beyond Astronomy
Copernicus was not only an astronomer. He also worked as a doctor, helped manage his town, and studied how money and economics worked.
He showed that learning many subjects can help you see the world in new ways.
Legacy
Today, Copernicus is remembered as a scientist who changed how we understand our place in space. His ideas helped start a time of discovery called the Scientific Revolution.
By being patient, curious, and brave enough to think differently, Copernicus inspired future scientists to explore the universe.
🎉 Fun Facts
Copernicus did most of his star watching with simple tools, not telescopes.
He waited many years to publish his big idea because he wanted to be sure it was correct.
A crater on the Moon is named after Copernicus.
He could speak several languages, including Latin and Greek.
