Early Life

Thomas John Watson Sr. was born on February 17, 1874, in Campbell, New York, USA. He grew up on a farm, where he learned the value of hard work, honesty, and teamwork. As a child, Thomas was curious and enjoyed learning how things worked.

Even though school was sometimes challenging for him, he never gave up. He believed that mistakes were chances to learn and improve. This positive attitude stayed with him throughout his life.

Starting His Career

Building IBM

In 1914, Thomas Watson Sr. became the leader of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company (CTR), a business that made machines to help organizations keep records. In 1924, CTR was renamed IBM, which stands for International Business Machines.

Under his guidance, IBM grew from a small company into a world-famous technology business. The machines IBM made were important early steps toward the computers we use today. Thomas also believed in treating workers with respect and helping them learn new skills.
