Sam Walton
1918-1992
Founder of Walmart and Sam’s Club, two of the world’s biggest retail chains
Early Life
Sam Walton was born in 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, USA. He grew up during a time when money was often tight, and his family had to move around a lot. These early experiences taught Sam the value of hard work and saving money.
As a boy, Sam was very active and loved sports. He also enjoyed helping his family by doing chores and delivering newspapers. Even at a young age, he liked finding smart ways to earn and manage money.
Learning and First Jobs
Sam went to college at the University of Missouri, where he studied business. He was curious about how stores worked and how they could serve customers better. After college, he worked at different retail stores and learned important lessons about teamwork and customer service.
He noticed that people liked stores with low prices and friendly workers. Sam believed that if you treated customers well, they would keep coming back. This idea stayed with him his whole life.
Creating Walmart
In 1962, Sam opened his first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas. His big idea was to sell products at lower prices than other stores. He did this by buying items in large amounts and saving money wherever possible.
Sam also believed in listening to his employees, whom he called “associates.” He thought happy workers would help create happy customers. Walmart slowly grew from one small store into many stores across the country.
Achievements and Success
Walmart became one of the largest and most successful companies in the world. Sam Walton became one of the richest people in America, but he did not act fancy. He was often seen driving an old pickup truck and wearing simple clothes.
Sam received many awards for his business success. More importantly, he changed how people shop by making everyday items more affordable for families.
Legacy
Sam Walton passed away in 1992, but his ideas live on. Walmart and Sam’s Club still follow his focus on low prices, teamwork, and customer care.
Sam’s story shows kids that big dreams can start small. With hard work, kindness, and smart thinking, one person can make a huge difference.
