Pelé

1940-2022

Being one of the greatest soccer players of all time and winning three World Cups

Early Life

Pelé was born as Edson Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940, in a small town in Brazil called Três Corações. His family was not rich, and sometimes they struggled to buy food or clothes. Even so, Pelé loved playing soccer more than anything.

As a boy, he often practiced by kicking a rolled-up sock because he could not afford a real soccer ball. His father was also a soccer player and taught him important skills and good sportsmanship. Pelé learned early that hard work and kindness matter just as much as talent.

Becoming a Soccer Star

Pelé joined a soccer team called Santos FC when he was only 15 years old. Very quickly, people noticed how fast he was and how easily he could score goals. Just one year later, at age 16, he played for Brazil’s national team.

In 1958, Pelé helped Brazil win the FIFA World Cup for the first time. He was only 17 years old, making him one of the youngest players ever to shine on such a big stage. Fans around the world were amazed by his skill and big smile.

Amazing Achievements

Pelé won the World Cup three times with Brazil—in 1958, 1962, and 1970. No other soccer player has ever won the World Cup three times as a player. He scored more than 1,000 goals during his career, which is an incredible number.

He became known as “The King of Soccer” because of how well he played and how much joy he brought to the game. Pelé showed that soccer could bring people together, no matter where they were from.

Life Beyond the Field

After retiring from soccer, Pelé worked to help others. He supported children’s education and used sports to teach teamwork and confidence. He also served as a sports ambassador, sharing his love of soccer with the world.

Pelé stayed positive and hopeful, even when life was hard. He believed that dreams can come true if you work hard and never give up.

Legacy

Pelé will always be remembered as one of the greatest athletes in history. He inspired millions of kids to play soccer and believe in themselves. His story shows that with passion, practice, and kindness, amazing things are possible.
