Joseph Stalin

Early Life

Joseph Stalin was born in 1878 in a small town called Gori, in a region that is now the country of Georgia. At the time, Georgia was part of the Russian Empire. His family was poor, and life was often difficult. As a child, he went to school and learned to read and write, and he became interested in history and ideas about how society could be organized.

When he was older, Stalin studied at a religious school where he was training to become a priest. During this time, he began reading political books and became very interested in ideas about changing society and helping workers.

Rise to Leadership

As a young man, Stalin joined political groups that wanted to change the government. After years of political activity, he became an important leader in a new country called the Soviet Union, which was formed after a revolution in 1917.

In the 1920s, Stalin became the main leader of the Soviet Union. This was a huge responsibility because the country was very large and home to many different cultures and languages.
