Early Life

Crazy Horse was born around 1840 near the Black Hills, a special place for the Lakota people. His Lakota name was Tȟašúŋke Witkó, which is often translated as “His Horse Is Crazy” or “His Horse Is Spirited.” As a child, he was quiet and thoughtful, and he loved being outdoors.

He learned important skills from elders, like caring for horses, hunting, and listening to nature. The Lakota believed that dreams and visions could guide a person’s life, and Crazy Horse took these teachings seriously.

As he grew older, Crazy Horse became known for his bravery and kindness. He believed leaders should protect others and put the needs of the community first. He did not like showing off and rarely spoke about himself.
