William Howard Taft

Early Life

William Howard Taft was born on September 15, 1857, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He grew up in a friendly and busy family that cared a lot about learning and public service. His father worked in government, which helped young William become interested in law and leadership.

As a boy, William liked reading, studying, and working hard at school. He was known for being kind, honest, and calm. These traits would help him later when he had to make big decisions.

Education and Early Career

William went to Yale University, where he was a very good student. He enjoyed learning about history and law, and he even helped edit a student publication. After college, he studied law and became a lawyer.

Soon, William began working for the government. He served as a judge and later helped manage the Philippines when it was a U.S. territory. He believed in fairness and tried to make life better for the people he worked with.

Becoming President

In 1909, William Howard Taft became the 27th President of the United States. As president, he focused on making sure businesses followed the rules and were fair to workers and customers. He believed in using the law to solve problems.

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court

After his time as president, William achieved a dream he had for many years. In 1921, he became the Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. This made him the only person in history to lead both the presidency and the Supreme Court.
