Madam C.J. Walker
1867-1919
Building a successful hair-care business and becoming one of America’s first self-made women millionaires.
Early Life
Madam C.J. Walker was born as Sarah Breedlove in 1867 in Louisiana. Her parents had been enslaved, and Sarah grew up with very little money. She worked hard from a young age and learned to be strong and independent.
As a young woman, Sarah moved to find better jobs. She worked as a washerwoman, washing clothes for other families. Even though life was difficult, she never stopped dreaming about a better future.
A Big Idea
Sarah noticed that many women, including herself, had problems with their hair and scalp. At the time, there were not many safe products made especially for Black women. Sarah began to study hair care and try out new ideas.
She created her own special hair and scalp products at home. When she saw that they helped people, she knew she had something important to share.
Building a Business
Sarah changed her name to Madam C.J. Walker and started selling her hair products door to door. She talked to women, showed them how to use the products, and listened to their needs. People trusted her because she truly wanted to help.
Soon, her business grew very fast. Madam Walker trained other women to sell her products, giving them jobs and confidence. These women were called “Walker Agents,” and they became proud business owners themselves.
Achievements
Madam C.J. Walker became one of the first women in the United States to earn a million dollars through her own hard work. This was an amazing achievement, especially during a time when many women and African Americans had fewer chances.
She also used her money to help others. She donated to schools, charities, and groups that worked for fairness and education.

Madam C.J. Walker passed away in 1919, but her story still inspires people today. She showed that with courage, creativity, and kindness, it is possible to change lives.
