Lev Yashin

Early Life

Lev Yashin was born on October 22, 1929, in Moscow, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. He grew up during a very difficult period that included World War II. Life was not always easy, but Lev loved sports and staying active.

When he was young, he worked in a factory and played sports in his free time. He enjoyed soccer the most, but he also played ice hockey as a goalie. This helped him develop quick reflexes and courage.

Becoming a Goalkeeper

Lev joined a soccer team called Dynamo Moscow. At first, he made mistakes, just like all learners do. Instead of giving up, he practiced harder and believed in himself.

Lev Yashin became famous around the world for his incredible saves. He was nicknamed **“The Black Spider”** because it looked like he had extra arms stopping the ball.

In 1963, he won the **Ballon d'Or**, an award for the best soccer player in Europe. He is still the only goalkeeper in history to win this award, which makes his achievement very special.

He helped his national team win an Olympic gold medal in 1956 and succeed in many other important matches. Lev was also known for leading his team and shouting helpful advice to his defenders.
