Alexander Ovechkin

A sports family in Moscow

Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin was born in Moscow on September 17, 1985. His mother, Tatyana Ovechkina, won two Olympic gold medals in basketball, and his father, Mikhail, played soccer. Alexander chose ice hockey. He joined the Dynamo Moscow program as a child and made the club's top team as a teenager. His powerful shot, speed, and enthusiasm quickly attracted attention.

First pick and first season

The Washington Capitals selected Ovechkin first overall in the 2004 National Hockey League draft. A league lockout delayed his move to North America, so his NHL debut came in October 2005. He scored 52 goals as a rookie and won the Calder Memorial Trophy. In 2007–08 he scored 65 goals and earned the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player.

Ovechkin became especially famous for a one-time slap shot from the left faceoff circle on power plays. Defenders knew where he wanted the puck, yet his timing and accuracy still made the shot difficult to stop. He also brought a physical, energetic style to the rink.

From individual awards to the Stanley Cup

For many years, the Capitals had excellent regular seasons but fell short in the playoffs. That changed in 2018. As team captain, Ovechkin helped Washington win its first Stanley Cup championship. He scored 15 playoff goals and received the Conn Smythe Trophy as the postseason's most valuable player. The victory added a team achievement to a career already filled with scoring awards.

Passing hockey's greatest goal mark

Wayne Gretzky's record of 894 NHL regular-season goals once seemed nearly unreachable. On April 6, 2025, Ovechkin scored career goal 895 to pass it. During the 2025–26 season he became the first NHL player to reach 900 regular-season goals and joined Gretzky as the only players with 1,000 combined regular-season and playoff goals. He finished that season with 929 regular-season goals. In July 2026, Washington re-signed him for a 22nd NHL season.

A record still growing

Ovechkin has spent his entire NHL career with Washington, becoming the longest-tenured athlete in the city's major professional sports history. He has represented Russia internationally and remains a Russian citizen. His career has unfolded during difficult international tensions, but this biography does not assume that an athlete speaks for a government.
