Early Life
James Madison was born on March 16, 1751, in Virginia. He grew up on a large farm called a plantation named Montpelier, where he spent lots of time reading books and thinking about big ideas. Even as a child, James loved learning and was curious about how governments should work.
James was smaller and quieter than many other boys his age, but he was very smart. He went to college at the College of New Jersey (now called Princeton University), where he studied history, law, and languages. He finished his studies very quickly because he worked so hard.
Becoming a Leader
After college, James Madison became interested in helping his country. At that time, the American colonies wanted independence from Great Britain. James believed people should have freedom and a fair government that listened to its citizens.
He began writing and speaking about how a strong but fair government should be organized. Even though he was shy, his ideas were powerful, and people paid attention.
Father of the Constitution
James Madison is best known as the "Father of the Constitution." In 1787, he played a leading role in writing the United States Constitution, which is the main rulebook for the country. This document explains how the government works and how power is shared.
