Immanuel Kant

Immanuel Kant

1724–1804

Helping people think carefully about right and wrong, knowledge, and how we understand the world

Early Life

Immanuel Kant was born in 1724 in a city called Königsberg. At the time, Königsberg was part of Prussia (a German-speaking state). Today, the city is called Kaliningrad and is part of Russia. His family did not have much money, but they believed strongly in learning, discipline, and good behavior. From a young age, Immanuel loved reading, asking questions, and thinking deeply about the world around him.

As a child, Kant was quiet and thoughtful. He enjoyed school and was especially interested in science, math, and big questions about how people should live. His teachers noticed that he took learning very seriously and encouraged him to keep studying.

Love of Learning

Kant went to the University of Königsberg and later became a teacher and professor there. He spent many years studying, thinking, and writing. Even though his ideas were often difficult, his goal was simple: he wanted to help people learn how to think clearly and carefully.

Kant believed that learning to think for yourself was one of the most important skills a person could have. He encouraged people not to accept ideas just because someone else said them, but to ask questions like, “Is this fair?” and “Does this make sense?”

Big Ideas

Immanuel Kant is most famous for his ideas about right and wrong. He believed that people should try to do the right thing because it is right, not just because it brings rewards. One of his key ideas was that rules should be fair for everyone and that you should only act in ways that would be okay for everyone to follow.

He also believed that every person has value and deserves respect. These ideas later influenced thinking about fairness, responsibility, and human rights around the world.

Daily Habits and Personality

Kant was known for living a very organized life. He woke up, worked, ate, and even took walks at the same time every day. People joked that they could set their clocks by his daily walk.

Even though he was very serious about his work, Kant cared deeply about honesty and doing what was right. He believed that small, good choices made every day could help make the world a better place.

Legacy

Immanuel Kant passed away in 1804, but his ideas are still taught today. Students all over the world learn about his thoughts on fairness, responsibility, and independent thinking.

Kant showed that using your mind carefully and respecting others are powerful tools. His life reminds us that thinking deeply and trying to do the right thing can leave a lasting mark on the world.
