A Jakarta Childhood in Motion

Before Iko Uwais became an international action star, he spent years repeating careful movements in a Jakarta silat school. Iko was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on February 12, 1983. At age 10, he began learning pencak silat, a group of Indonesian martial arts traditions, at the Tiga Berantai school founded by his grandfather, Achmad Bunawar. The practice joined physical skill with patience, control, and respect.

Iko kept training as he grew. In 2003, he placed third in a Jakarta competition. Two years later, he took first place at a national pencak silat championship and was named the best performer in the demonstration category. Those results showed what steady practice could build, although movies were not yet his job.

From a Silat School to a Film Set

In 2007, filmmaker Gareth Evans visited Iko’s school while working on a documentary about silat. Evans noticed how clearly Iko’s movements worked on camera and invited him to act. Iko had been driving for a telecommunications company, so accepting the offer meant trying a completely different career.

For Merantau, released in 2009, Iko learned the Minangkabau harimau style of silat with teacher Edwel Datuk Rajo Gampo Alam. He played the lead role and helped shape the action. Acting, choreography, and martial arts required different skills, but Iko learned how rehearsal, camera position, and timing could turn practiced movement into a readable screen story.

The Raid Reaches the World

Iko’s next major step was The Raid, which premiered in 2011 and reached wider audiences in 2012. He played Rama and also helped choreograph the action. The Indonesian film’s tightly planned movement drew attention at international festivals and introduced many viewers to both Iko and silat. He returned for The Raid 2 in 2014 with an even larger production.

More roles followed across Indonesian and international movies. Iko appeared in Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, starred in Headshot in 2016, and worked on Mile 22 and The Night Comes for Us in 2018. On these projects, his contribution was not only performing. He also helped teams plan movements so actors, stunt performers, and cameras could work together.

Building Stories Through Movement

In 2014, Iko founded the Uwais Team, a group devoted to fight choreography. His responsibilities grew again with the Netflix series Wu Assassins in 2019: he was its lead actor, a producer, lead martial-arts choreographer, and stunt coordinator. These jobs placed him on both sides of the camera, helping organize how an action story was made.

Also in 2019, UNESCO added traditions of pencak silat in Indonesia to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. That honor belonged to the communities that have carried the tradition across generations, not to one performer. Still, Iko’s films have given audiences around the world another doorway into Indonesian movement and culture. His wider contribution comes from joining deep training with filmmaking craft—and showing that memorable screen action depends on preparation, teamwork, and cultural roots.
