Early Life
Haile Selassie was born in 1892 in a place called Ejersa Goro, in what is now eastern Ethiopia. His birth name was Tafari Makonnen. Ethiopia is a country in Africa with a very long and proud history.
As a child, Tafari loved learning and worked hard in his studies. He learned reading, writing, history, and about other countries and cultures. People noticed early on that he was thoughtful, calm, and serious about helping others. These qualities helped prepare him for leadership.
Becoming Emperor
In 1930, Tafari Makonnen became Emperor of Ethiopia and took the name Haile Selassie, which means "Power of the Trinity." He became emperor during a time when many countries were changing and facing new challenges.
As emperor, Haile Selassie worked to modernize Ethiopia. He supported building more schools, hospitals, and roads. He also wanted Ethiopia to stay independent and be respected by other nations.
Standing Up for Peace

Legacy
Haile Selassie was removed from power in 1974 during a time of political change in Ethiopia. He passed away in 1975.
