Edvard Grieg
1843-1907
A famous composer who wrote beautiful music inspired by Norway’s nature and stories.
Early Life
Edvard Grieg was born in 1843 in the city of Bergen, Norway. Bergen was surrounded by mountains, forests, and the sea, and these natural sights later inspired much of his music. Edvard grew up in a musical family, and his mother was a piano teacher.
When Edvard was very young, he learned to play the piano and loved making up melodies. His parents noticed his talent and encouraged him to practice. Even though practicing was sometimes hard, Edvard’s love for music kept him going.
Learning Music
When Edvard was 15 years old, he traveled to Germany to study music at a special school called a conservatory. Life there was not always easy, and he sometimes felt lonely. Still, he worked hard and learned how to become a professional composer.
After finishing school, Edvard wanted to write music that sounded like his home country. He believed music should tell stories and share feelings, not just follow rules.
Achievements
Edvard Grieg became famous for writing music inspired by Norwegian folk songs and legends. One of his most famous works is the music for a play called *Peer Gynt*. Many people recognize pieces like “Morning Mood” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”
He also wrote piano music, songs, and orchestral pieces that are still played today. Audiences loved how his music felt magical, emotional, and full of nature.
Love for Norway
Grieg was very proud of being Norwegian. At a time when many composers copied other countries’ styles, he chose to celebrate his own culture. He used rhythms and melodies that reminded people of Norwegian dances and landscapes.
Because of this, Grieg helped make Norway’s music known around the world.

Edvard Grieg passed away in 1907, but his music lives on. His home, called Troldhaugen, is now a museum where people can learn about his life.
