Being a famous fashion model, Victoria’s Secret Angel, and businesswoman known for walking runways around the world
Alessandra Corine Ambrósio was born on April 11, 1981, in Erechim, a city in Brazil's southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. Her family ran a gas station, and she grew up with a younger sister. As a child, Ambrosio was shy but interested in fashion. She took modeling classes and entered Brazil's Elite Model Look competition in 1996, when she was 15. The contest helped her make professional contacts even though she did not win the international title.
Ambrosio moved into a demanding industry where travel, auditions, long fittings, and repeated photo sessions are part of the job. Early assignments included magazine work in Brazil and an advertising campaign for Guess. She learned to adjust posture, expression, and movement for different photographers and designers. By the early 2000s, she was appearing in international magazines and runway shows.
Ambrosio became widely known through Victoria's Secret. She first appeared in the company's televised fashion show in 2000, became an "Angel" in 2004, and served as the first spokesmodel for its PINK line. She ultimately walked in 17 of the company's fashion shows before announcing her final one in 2017. Her career also included work for designers and fashion houses in Europe, Brazil, and the United States.
Fashion modeling can celebrate design and teamwork, but it can also create unrealistic ideas about appearance. Photographs are carefully selected, styled, lit, and edited. Ambrosio's profession should not be treated as a rule for how anyone's body must look.
Ambrosio represented Brazilian fashion during the handover segment at the 2012 London Olympic closing ceremony. She later took acting roles, including a part in the Brazilian television series Verdades Secretas, and worked as an NBC correspondent during the 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2014 she launched the fashion and lifestyle line Ále by Alessandra, adding business decisions and product design to her work in front of the camera.
Ambrosio has supported charitable campaigns connected with Brazil, including the #TeamRio initiative for social projects. She has also spoken about balancing work and parenthood. Her path from a small Brazilian city to an international career required persistence and adaptability. The most useful lesson is not about looking a certain way; it is about learning a craft, working with many teams, and using new opportunities to grow.
