A Contest That Changed Direction

Adriana Lima was born on June 12, 1981, in Salvador, a coastal city in the Brazilian state of Bahia. Long before international runways became her workplace, she thought about becoming a pediatrician. She took part in pageants when she was young, but modeling was not yet her plan.

At age 15, Lima entered a modeling search because a friend did not want to enter alone. Lima won Ford's Supermodel of Brazil contest, then placed second in the 1996 Supermodel of the World competition. The result opened a door, but it did not make her an instant expert. In 1997, she moved to New York and signed with Elite Model Management, beginning the unfamiliar work of castings, fittings, and learning how to present clothes for a camera or audience.

Learning the Runway and Camera

Lima made her New York Fashion Week runway debut in an Anna Sui show in September 1997. Her first magazine cover followed with Marie Claire Brazil in 1998. She began working with Victoria's Secret that year and appeared in the company's annual fashion show for the first time in 1999.

A runway walk may last only a few seconds, yet the finished moment depends on practice and a large team. Lima learned to adjust her movement and expression for designers, photographers, makeup artists, and different kinds of clothing. Her print and runway work grew to include fashion houses such as Prada, Versace, Givenchy, and Marc Jacobs. She also became a Maybelline spokesmodel from 2003 through 2009. Those varied assignments helped turn a teenage contest winner into an internationally recognized Brazilian model.

Taking Skills Beyond Fashion

Lima's long Victoria's Secret career became one of her best-known achievements. By 2016, she had appeared in 16 of the company's televised runway shows. That same year, she and fellow Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio joined NBC's coverage of the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. As food and culture correspondents, they introduced viewers to parts of the host city beyond the sports competitions.

The assignment used different skills from a runway: speaking to a television audience, guiding a segment, and representing the culture of Brazil during a global event. Lima continued modeling while also taking on television and public-event work. Her original Victoria's Secret runway run ended in 2018, after nearly two decades associated with the brand.

Returning with Wider Experience

In February 2023, FIFA appointed Lima as its first Global Fan Ambassador. The role involved fan-focused projects, and she presented the fan award at FIFA's ceremony in Paris. In October 2024, at age 43, she returned to the Victoria's Secret runway, six years after her previous appearance. The return added a new chapter to a profession that has often placed heavy attention on youth and appearance.

Adriana Lima's wider contribution comes from the length and range of her work: she carried Brazilian visibility into international fashion, adapted from print and runway jobs to broadcasting and sports outreach, and continued taking on major assignments as an experienced adult. Her story also offers a useful reminder for young readers: photographs and fashion shows are carefully built team projects, and no person's worth can be measured by a picture, an outfit, or a contest result.
