An award-winning Indian actress and former Miss World known for her beauty, talent, and international success
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was born on November 1, 1973, in Mangaluru, India, and grew up mainly in Mumbai. She studied science and later architecture before professional modeling changed her plans. Training in classical dance and an interest in the arts also helped her become comfortable performing in public.
In 1994, Rai placed second in the Femina Miss India competition and represented India at Miss World in Sun City, South Africa. She won the Miss World title at age 21. The result made her internationally recognizable, but it was the beginning of a career rather than its final achievement.
Rai made her film debut in Mani Ratnam's Tamil-language drama Iruvar in 1997. Her first Hindi film, Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya, appeared the same year. She went on to work in Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, and English-language productions, learning different performance styles and reaching audiences far beyond pageants and advertising.
Major Hindi films included Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), Mohabbatein (2000), and Devdas (2002). She received Filmfare best-actress awards for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas. Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas was shown out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002, introducing many international viewers to its cast and spectacular design.
In 2003, Rai became the first Indian woman actor to serve on the Cannes feature-film jury. She later appeared in international projects such as Bride and Prejudice, The Mistress of Spices, and The Pink Panther 2, while continuing to make Indian films. Her work helped make the worldwide reach of Indian cinema more visible during a period when its international audiences were rapidly growing.
Rai received India's Padma Shri in 2009 for contributions to the arts. Awards and red-carpet appearances are only one part of her public work, however; her filmography includes romantic drama, historical spectacle, comedy, and literary adaptation. Each genre has required a different balance of movement, expression, language, and timing.
In 2012, UNAIDS appointed Rai Bachchan as an international goodwill ambassador focused on HIV prevention and on protecting children from new infections. She has used the role to support health education and reduce stigma. Her career shows how modeling, pageants, acting, and public service can overlap, while the careful work of learning languages, dance, and screen performance remains at the center.
