Early Life

Yao Ming was born on September 12, 1980, in Shanghai, China. Both of his parents were professional basketball players, so sports were a big part of his life from the start. Yao grew very tall at a young age, and people quickly noticed his strong potential.

As a kid, Yao worked hard at school and on the basketball court. He practiced every day and learned how to be patient and disciplined. Even though he was taller than most kids, he focused on teamwork and improving his skills.

Basketball Journey

Yao began playing professional basketball in China as a teenager with the Shanghai Sharks. In 2002, he helped his team win a Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) championship, and fans loved watching him play. His height, skill, and calm attitude made him stand out.

In 2002, Yao was chosen as the first pick in the NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. This was a historic moment because he became the first international player without U.S. college experience to be selected first overall, and the most famous Chinese player to star in the NBA.
