From Washington to a Streaming Desk

A live streamer turns playing a game into a performance, conversation, and community all at once. Rachell Marie Hofstetter, known online as Valkyrae, built a career by learning how to do all three. She was born on January 8, 1992, and grew up in Moses Lake, Washington. Video games were part of her childhood long before they became her job.

As a young adult, Hofstetter attended community college and worked several jobs, including at a GameStop store. While working there, she shared gaming clips on Instagram. Viewers encouraged her to try Twitch, a service where audiences can watch and chat with players in real time. She began streaming on Twitch in 2015, first treating it as a project she could build alongside school and work.

Turning a Hobby Into Full-Time Work

Streaming required more than playing well. Hofstetter had to choose games, prepare broadcasts, speak to viewers, and keep a schedule that gave people a reason to return. Her audience grew as she played story-focused games and later Fortnite. By 2018, she was earning enough from streaming to support herself and help her mother pay debts connected with a childcare business.

In October 2018, the esports and entertainment company 100 Thieves signed Valkyrae as its first woman content creator. That role connected her independent channel with a larger gaming organization while she continued making her own broadcasts and videos. In 2019, the Shorty Awards named her a finalist in its Gaming category. She also spoke publicly about harassment faced by women online, showing that a growing audience did not erase the need for safer, better-moderated communities.

A Breakthrough Year on YouTube

On January 13, 2020, Valkyrae moved her live broadcasts from Twitch to an exclusive deal with YouTube. Her channel grew dramatically later that year as she played Among Us, a social-deduction game built around teamwork, observation, and mystery. Group sessions with other creators made each round feel like a changing story rather than a contest with a fixed script.

YouTube's official year-end review described Valkyrae as one of the biggest female live streamers across all platforms. In December 2020, The Game Awards named her Content Creator of the Year. The award recognized not a single match, but the larger craft of holding an audience's attention through commentary, collaboration, and quick decisions during live play.

From Creator to Company Co-Owner

On April 7, 2021, 100 Thieves announced that Valkyrae and fellow creator Jack “CouRage” Dunlop had become co-owners. The new role gave them equity and a voice in business strategy, including finding talent and developing programs, while they continued creating videos. It marked a change from joining an organization as a performer to helping guide its future.

Forbes included Hofstetter in its 2022 30 Under 30 Games list. She has continued to experiment with streams, videos, podcasts, and acting while keeping gaming at the center of her work. Her wider contribution is helping show how online play can combine entertainment, teamwork, production, and entrepreneurship. Valkyrae's path also made a woman of Filipino and German heritage more visible in a field where women creators have often faced extra barriers.
