A Young Voice Moves to Atlanta

Before Usher Raymond IV filled arenas with singing and dance, he was a child learning to hold a melody in a church choir. He was born in Dallas, Texas, on October 14, 1978, and grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Singing at church helped him practice in front of other people, while local contests gave him a chance to test his voice beyond the choir.

When Usher was 12, his family moved to Atlanta, a growing center for rhythm and blues music. A talent-show performance caught the attention of music executive L.A. Reid, who helped sign him to LaFace Records. Usher released his self-titled first album in 1994, when he was 15. Starting so young meant learning schoolwork, recording, choreography, and stage discipline at the same time.

Finding a Sound of His Own

Usher’s second album, My Way, arrived in 1997 and showed how much he had developed as a performer. It reached number four on the Billboard 200, while “Nice & Slow” became his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. “You Make Me Wanna…” and “My Way” also became major hits. His smooth singing mattered, but so did the precise movement and storytelling he brought to videos and concerts.

The 2001 album 8701 continued that growth. “U Remind Me” earned Usher his first Grammy Award, and “U Don’t Have to Call” won the same vocal category the following year. By combining careful vocal phrasing with athletic dance, he built a performance style that listeners could recognize even as his music changed.

The Year of Confessions

In 2004, Confessions turned an already successful career into a landmark pop-music year. “Yeah!,” “Burn,” “Confessions Part II,” and “My Boo,” a duet with Alicia Keys, each reached number one in the United States. The Recording Industry Association of America later certified the album at 14 million units, and the Recording Academy honored it as best contemporary rhythm and blues album.

Some songs on Confessions tell grown-up relationship stories. Listeners sometimes wondered which details came from Usher’s life, but an album is a created work shaped by singers, songwriters, producers, and other collaborators, not a diary that should be read as literal fact. Its lasting achievement came from how the team joined vulnerable singing, memorable rhythms, and exact choreography.

Bigger Stages and New Leaders

Usher kept recording, acting, touring, and experimenting with live performance. He received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star for recording in 2016. Berklee College of Music awarded him an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2023. On February 11, 2024, he headlined the Super Bowl LVIII halftime show in Las Vegas, bringing songs from several decades into one fast-moving stadium performance. Emory University awarded him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 2025.

His work with young people has grown alongside his music. In 1999, Usher, his mother Jonnetta Patton, and Shawn H. Wilson founded Usher’s New Look. The nonprofit has helped tens of thousands of young people explore leadership and careers in creative, technical, and business fields. Usher’s wider contribution is therefore more than a list of hits: he has joined voice, dance, teamwork, and mentorship into a career that invites both audiences and future creators to take part.
