John William Coltrane was born on September 23, 1926, in Hamlet, North Carolina, in the United States. He grew up mainly in High Point, North Carolina, where music was an important part of his life. As a child, John played the clarinet and later switched to the saxophone, which became his favorite instrument.

When John was a teenager, his family moved to Philadelphia. This big city had many chances for young musicians to learn and grow. John practiced every day and listened carefully to other musicians so he could improve his skills.
