Joe Louis (1914–1981) boxed in the 1930s and 1940s. He came from LaFayette, Alabama and grew up partly in Detroit. He became the world heavyweight champion from 1937 to 1949 and earned the nickname "The Brown Bomber."

He defended his title 25 times, the longest run in heavyweight boxing history. That meant he beat top fighters again and again. He was known for strong, accurate punches, steady footwork, and calm thinking inside the ring.

One of his most famous fights was a rematch in 1938 with German champion Max Schmeling. Louis knocked him out in the first round. Many people saw that victory as more than sport — it lifted spirits and became a proud moment for Americans of many backgrounds.

During World War II Joe Louis helped his country by taking part in exhibitions, raising money for war bonds, and visiting soldiers. He used his fame to bring people together and to show that Black athletes could be leaders and examples during a time of unfair laws and rules.

After his boxing career Joe Louis was remembered as a true sports hero and is honored in boxing halls of fame. His story still teaches kids about courage, hard work, and how one person can help change what people believe.
