Early Life

Fats Domino was born as Antoine Dominique Domino Jr. on February 26, 1928, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He grew up in a lively neighborhood full of music, sounds, and celebrations. His family loved music, and young Antoine listened to jazz and rhythm and blues all around him.

When he was about 10 years old, he taught himself how to play the piano. He practiced every day and quickly became very good. As a young performer, he was given the nickname “Fats” by a bandleader, inspired by the famous jazz musician Fats Waller. The nickname stayed with him for life.
