From Crieff to Drama School
Ewan McGregor has spent more than three decades turning himself into explorers, singers, detectives, and imaginary heroes. He was born on March 31, 1971, in Perthshire, Scotland, and grew up in the town of Crieff. As a teenager, he left high school and worked at Perth Theatre, where he learned about performances both onstage and behind the scenes. After a year at Kirkcaldy College of Technology, he successfully auditioned for the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.
McGregor left Guildhall in 1992 and soon moved into professional acting. His first major television role came in Dennis Potter's 1993 series Lipstick on Your Collar. The job began a career built on training, close observation, and a willingness to try very different kinds of stories.
A Breakthrough on British Screens
McGregor worked with director Danny Boyle on Shallow Grave in 1994 and then starred in Trainspotting, released in 1996. In Trainspotting, he played the fictional Mark Renton, a young man caught in heroin addiction. The film deals with difficult choices and serious harm; it is a drama, not an account of McGregor's own life. The performance helped put both actor and director on the international map, and McGregor won a BAFTA Scotland acting award.
A much larger audience met him as the fictional Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi in three Star Wars films released from 1999 through 2005. These roles were very different, yet both required him to make an invented character feel specific and believable.
Singing, Directing, and Award-Winning Roles
In the 2001 musical Moulin Rouge!, McGregor acted and sang as the writer Christian, earning a Golden Globe nomination. He continued moving among comedy, drama, fantasy, voice work, and theater. He made his Broadway debut in The Real Thing in 2014, then directed his first feature film, American Pastoral, in 2016 while also starring in it.
Television brought more demanding work. McGregor played two very different brothers in Fargo and won a Golden Globe in 2018. In 2021, he won an Emmy for portraying fashion designer Halston. He returned to Obi-Wan Kenobi in a 2022 series, showing how an actor can revisit a character years later while bringing new experience to the performance.
Long Roads and Work for Children
Acting is only one part of McGregor's public life. Beginning with Long Way Round in 2004, he and Charley Boorman made documentary series about long motorcycle journeys. Their fourth adventure, Long Way Home, was released in 2025 after a route through 17 European countries on vintage motorcycles.
McGregor has supported UNICEF UK since 2004. His journeys have included visits to UNICEF programs, where he learned how local teams help children with education, health, nutrition, clean water, and protection. He received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2024 and BAFTA Scotland's Outstanding Contribution award in 2025. His wider contribution comes from range: he has kept learning across film, television, theater, directing, and documentary work while using public attention to support children around the world.
