Ernest Rutherford

Early Life

Ernest Rutherford was born in 1871 in Brightwater, a small rural town near Nelson, New Zealand. He was the fourth of twelve children, so his home was always busy and noisy. Even as a young boy, Ernest loved asking questions and figuring out how things worked.

Because of his work, Ernest is often called the "father of nuclear physics." In 1908, he won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discoveries, which was a very big honor.
