Edmund Hillary

1919-2008

Being one of the first people to climb to the top of Mount Everest.

Early Life

Edmund Hillary was born in 1919 in Auckland, New Zealand. As a child, he was shy and small for his age, but he loved reading adventure books. These stories helped him dream about exploring the outdoors.

When Edmund went to school, he discovered hiking and climbing during trips to the mountains. He realized that being in nature made him feel strong and confident. This love for the mountains stayed with him for the rest of his life.

Learning to Climb

After finishing school, Edmund worked as a beekeeper with his family. This job gave him free time in the winter to practice mountain climbing. He trained hard by climbing mountains in New Zealand and learning how to survive in cold, snowy places.

Edmund believed that practice and patience were the keys to success. Even when climbs were difficult, he stayed calm and focused. These skills helped prepare him for bigger adventures.

Climbing Mount Everest

In 1953, Edmund Hillary joined a team trying to climb Mount Everest, the tallest mountain in the world. The mountain is extremely cold, windy, and dangerous, and many climbers had failed before.

On May 29, 1953, Edmund Hillary and a skilled Sherpa climber named Tenzing Norgay reached the very top. They were the first people known to stand on the summit of Mount Everest. Edmund later said it was a team effort, not just a personal victory.

Helping Others

After becoming famous, Edmund did not stop caring about others. He worked hard to help the Sherpa people who lived near Mount Everest. He helped build schools, hospitals, and bridges in their villages.

Edmund believed that helping people was just as important as exploring mountains. He spent many years raising money and visiting Nepal to support these projects.

Legacy

Edmund Hillary is remembered as a brave explorer and a kind helper. He showed the world that big dreams can come true with hard work and teamwork. His life reminds us that success is even better when we use it to help others.

Today, Edmund Hillary is a hero not only for climbing a mountain, but also for having a big heart.
