From Brooklyn to a Television Studio

Eddie Regan Murphy was born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 3, 1961, and grew up mostly on Long Island. As a teenager, he practiced impressions and performed stand-up comedy around New York. He was only 19 when he joined Saturday Night Live in 1980. His quick changes of voice, expression, and character made him a major part of the show, and he became the first cast member to host an episode while still in the cast.

Murphy's early stand-up was made for adults and sometimes used strong language. Television, however, taught him how a short sketch, a clear character, and careful timing could reach millions of viewers. By the time he left the show in 1984, he had also begun a movie career.

A New Kind of Movie Star

Murphy made his big-screen debut in 48 Hrs. in 1982, followed by Trading Places in 1983. Then Beverly Hills Cop turned him into an international star in 1984. His characters often reacted to powerful people with speed, confidence, and humor, helping place a young Black comedian at the center of major Hollywood movies.

He kept experimenting. Coming to America (1988) mixed a romantic story with several characters played by Murphy under makeup. In 1989, he wrote, directed, and starred in Harlem Nights. Later, The Nutty Professor (1996) asked him to play seven different people in one film. These performances depended on more than costumes: each character needed a different voice, posture, and rhythm.

Voices, Music, and Dramatic Acting

Murphy also built a career that audiences could hear as well as see. He voiced Mushu in Mulan and Donkey in the Shrek films, using vocal energy to make animated characters feel lively. Music was another part of his work. In 1984, his album Eddie Murphy: Comedian won a Grammy Award for comedy, and he later recorded pop songs.

In Dreamgirls (2006), Murphy played the fictional singer James “Thunder” Early. The dramatic musical role earned him a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for supporting actor. In 2019, he portrayed real-life entertainer Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite Is My Name, while also helping produce the film. These roles showed that his range went beyond rapid-fire jokes.

Recognition Across Generations

Murphy returned to host Saturday Night Live in 2019 and won his first Emmy in 2020 for that performance. He had already received the Kennedy Center's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2015. The Golden Globes gave him a career honor in 2023, and the American Film Institute presented him with its Life Achievement Award on April 18, 2026.

Those honors trace an unusual path from teenage stand-up stages to television, movies, music, animation, and drama. Murphy helped expand the possibilities for Black leading actors in blockbuster comedies, while later family films introduced his voice to children who had not seen his early work. His wider contribution is the craft behind the laughter: decades of observing how a voice, a pause, or a change in posture can turn one performer into many memorable characters.
