A Dressmaker's Daughter in Southern Italy

One of the most famous dresses of the internet age helped inspire an entirely new way to search online. The designer behind it, Donatella Francesca Versace, was born on May 2, 1955, in Reggio Calabria, a city at the toe of Italy's boot. Her mother ran a dressmaking business, so fabric, fittings, and the work behind finished clothes were part of family life. Donatella studied languages in Florence, but she also traveled to Milan to help her older brother Gianni as his career in fashion grew.

When Gianni founded his own fashion house in 1978, Donatella became a trusted adviser. She did not begin as its main clothing designer. Instead, she helped shape advertising, fashion shows, and the way the company connected clothing with music, performers, and popular culture.

Finding Her Own Creative Voice

During the 1980s, Donatella officially joined the company and directed advertising campaigns. Gianni valued her honest opinions, while their brother Santo worked on the business side. In 1993, Donatella took charge of Versus, a younger line within the company. The job gave her a place to test her own ideas and learn how to guide a design team.

Gianni was murdered in 1997. The loss was personal and also left the family company without its founder. Donatella became its creative leader and, in July 1998, presented her first couture collection in Paris. Taking responsibility did not mean copying every old design. She kept recognizable elements—bright color, dramatic shapes, and confident styling—while building collections for a new era.

A Green Dress Changes Online Search

A striking moment arrived at the Grammy Awards in February 2000. Jennifer Lopez wore a green jungle-print Versace dress designed by Donatella, and enormous numbers of people searched online for pictures of it. Google later explained that the demand helped inspire Google Images, launched in 2001. A fashion design had unexpectedly influenced how people found pictures on the internet.

Donatella continued connecting runway design with musicians, actors, and new media, but her work also required long-term management of many designers and craftspeople. In 2018, the Council of Fashion Designers of America honored her with its International Award. That year, the Versace company was sold to Capri Holdings, while Donatella remained its creative chief.

Carrying a Fashion House into a New Chapter

On April 1, 2025, Donatella moved from chief creative officer to chief brand ambassador. The new role kept her as an advocate for the house while another designer took responsibility for collections. Prada Group completed its purchase of Versace in December 2025, beginning another chapter for the company her family had started.

Donatella's wider contribution reaches beyond any single red-carpet look. Across decades, she helped turn design sketches into campaigns, shows, teams, and a recognizable public identity. Her story shows that creative work can involve listening, organizing, adapting after loss, and knowing when to make room for new leadership as well as drawing clothes.
