Music in Vega Baja

Bad Bunny was born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio on March 10, 1994, in Puerto Rico. He grew up in the Almirante Sur neighborhood of Vega Baja with his parents and two younger brothers. He sang in his church choir and listened to salsa, merengue, reggaeton, and Puerto Rican rapper Vico C. Those sounds later mixed inside his own music.

As a young adult, Benito studied audiovisual communication at the University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo and worked as a grocery bagger. He recorded songs independently and posted them online. His 2016 track "Diles" drew the attention of producer DJ Luian. Collaborations with artists across Latin music helped his deep voice and flexible style reach a much larger audience. His stage name came from a childhood photograph in which he looked unhappy while wearing a rabbit costume.

Albums that crossed borders

Bad Bunny's first album, X 100pre, arrived in 2018. He followed it with projects including YHLQMDLG, El Último Tour del Mundo, and Un Verano Sin Ti. In 2020, El Último Tour del Mundo became the first all-Spanish-language album to reach number one on the main U.S. Billboard album chart. Un Verano Sin Ti became the first entirely Spanish-language album nominated for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

His music moves among reggaeton, Latin trap, pop, rock, salsa, plena, and other styles. He has also acted and appeared in professional wrestling, but music and performance remain the center of his work.

Puerto Rico at the center

Bad Bunny often uses his platform to discuss Puerto Rican culture and public issues. His 2025 album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS was recorded in Puerto Rico and drew on salsa, bomba, plena, and early reggaeton. At the 2025 Latin Grammys it won Album of the Year. In February 2026, it became the first all-Spanish-language recording to win the Grammy for Album of the Year.

Why his career matters

Bad Bunny did not switch to English to reach a worldwide audience. Instead, he helped make Spanish-language popular music even more visible across international charts, tours, and awards. His work is written for adults and sometimes contains explicit language, so not every song is intended for children. Still, his career offers a clear lesson: local culture and language can be a source of creative strength, not something an artist must leave behind to be heard around the world.
