From Florida to a Broadway Stage

Before Ariana Grande filled arenas with her voice, she was a 15-year-old learning how a Broadway company works. Ariana Grande-Butera was born in Boca Raton, Florida, on June 26, 1993. In 2008, she joined the original Broadway cast of the musical 13 as Charlotte and also understudied the role of Patrice.

Television followed. Grande played Cat Valentine on Nickelodeon's Victorious, which began in 2010, and later on Sam & Cat. Those roles made her familiar to young viewers, while performances on the shows gave her chances to sing as well as act.

Finding Her Sound on Records

Grande's first studio album, Yours Truly, arrived in 2013 and reached number one in the United States. Its single “The Way,” recorded with Mac Miller, became her first top-ten hit. She then built a pop and rhythm-and-blues catalog that moved from the bright hooks of My Everything and Dangerous Woman to more personal writing on Sweetener, thank u, next, and Positions.

The Recording Academy gave Sweetener the 2019 Grammy Award for best pop vocal album. In 2021, “Rain on Me,” her duet with Lady Gaga, won best pop duo/group performance. These awards measured success, but her broader achievement was learning to use a light, high voice in many settings—from close harmonies and comedy to large concert songs.

Responding to Tragedy with Music

On May 22, 2017, a terrorist bomb exploded at Manchester Arena in England as people were leaving Grande's concert. Twenty-two people were killed, and many others were injured. The attack was not part of the performance; it targeted concertgoers, including children and teenagers, at the end of the night.

Grande returned to Manchester on June 4 to headline the One Love Manchester benefit concert. Other musicians joined her, and donations supported people affected by the bombing through the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. Her next album, Sweetener, included music shaped by grief and recovery, showing that a pop record can hold joy and difficult feelings at the same time.

Returning to Acting and Musical Theater

Grande released her seventh studio album, eternal sunshine, in March 2024, then returned to movie musicals as Glinda in Wicked. Her performance brought together the comic timing of her television years, the theater training of 13, and the vocal control of her recording career. It earned her a 2025 Academy Award nomination for supporting actress.

She continued the role in Wicked: For Good in 2025. In 2026, Grande and Cynthia Erivo won a Grammy for their recording of “Defying Gravity,” giving Grande a third Grammy win. Her wider contribution reaches beyond chart totals: she has carried skills from children's television to pop albums, benefit concerts, Broadway-rooted films, and collaborations, showing how one performer can keep learning across different kinds of storytelling.
