Learning to Cut Cloth

Lee Alexander McQueen was born in London on March 17, 1969, and grew up in the city's East End. Friends and family called him Lee. He left school at 16 and became an apprentice on Savile Row, where traditional men's suits are cut with great precision. At Anderson & Sheppard and Gieves & Hawkes, he learned that the shape of a garment begins with careful measuring, pattern cutting, and construction.

McQueen then worked for theatrical costumiers and as a pattern cutter for designers Koji Tatsuno and Romeo Gigli. These jobs joined disciplined tailoring with the drama of the stage. He entered the master's program in fashion design at Central Saint Martins and presented his graduate collection in 1992. Fashion editor Isabella Blow bought the collection and became an important supporter.

A Designer Who Made Shows Tell Stories

McQueen founded his own label and quickly became known for clothing that was technically exact but emotionally unsettling. His runway shows used history, nature, film, and new technology to explore beauty, power, and fear. In a 1999 show, industrial robots sprayed paint onto a white dress worn by model Shalom Harlow. In 2006, a projected image of Kate Moss appeared like a ghost inside a glass pyramid.

The spectacles could be controversial, and critics debated whether some images challenged violence and prejudice or repeated them. That debate is part of studying his work honestly. The strongest designs asked viewers to look closely at both craftsmanship and the stories clothing tells about bodies and identity.

Givenchy, Awards, and Independence

McQueen became chief designer at the French house Givenchy in 1996, while continuing his own collections. He left Givenchy in 2001 after a business partnership gave his label more room to grow. The British Fashion Council named him British Designer of the Year four times between 1996 and 2001. In 2003, he received a CBE for services to fashion.

Death and an Ongoing Influence

McQueen died by suicide on February 11, 2010, at age 40. It is important to discuss that fact without treating suffering as romantic or as the source of creativity. His colleague Sarah Burton completed the final collection and continued leading the house. Museum exhibitions, including Savage Beauty at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, later examined how his knowledge of precise traditional tailoring turned fashion into a powerful form of visual storytelling.
