Alejandro González Iñárritu

A storyteller from Mexico City

Alejandro González Iñárritu was born in Mexico City on August 15, 1963. As a teenager and young man, he crossed the Atlantic and worked on a cargo ship, experiences that introduced him to unfamiliar places and people. Back in Mexico, music became his first major storytelling tool. He worked at the radio station WFM, eventually directing the station and shaping programs with music, sound, and short narratives.

Learning film by making things

Iñárritu did not begin with a traditional film-school path. He composed music for Mexican films, studied theater, produced television, and founded the production company Zeta Film. Commercials and short projects taught him how camera movement, acting, editing, and sound could work together. Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto became one of his important collaborators.

Amores perros opens a door

His first feature film, Amores perros (2000), follows connected lives in Mexico City. It won the Critics' Week Grand Prize at Cannes and received an Academy Award nomination for best foreign-language film. Iñárritu then made 21 Grams (2003), Babel (2006), and Biutiful (2010). These films often connect people across countries and examine grief, family, chance, and responsibility. Their stories can be intense and are generally made for mature audiences.

Historic Academy Awards

With Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Iñárritu used long, carefully planned shots to make much of the 2014 film appear continuous. It won Academy Awards for best picture, directing, original screenplay, and cinematography. The next year, he won best director again for The Revenant. He became only the third filmmaker to win directing Oscars in consecutive years, and the first Mexican director to do so.

Expanding what cinema can do

Iñárritu continued experimenting beyond an ordinary movie screen. His virtual-reality installation CARNE y ARENA placed visitors inside a dramatized migrant journey. It premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival and received a special Academy Award. In 2022, Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths returned to questions of Mexico, memory, and identity.

Iñárritu's career shows that film is a team art. His achievements depend on actors, writers, designers, editors, musicians, and technicians working together. He is remembered not only for awards, but for asking audiences to look closely at lives different from their own. Across these projects, he has repeatedly changed format and technique while keeping human experience at the center of the story for audiences around the world.
