A High-School Band and an Early Setback

Long before Adam Levine sang in packed arenas, he was a Los Angeles student making music with friends. He was born on March 18, 1979, and grew up surrounded by records his parents enjoyed. While attending Brentwood High School, he helped form Kara’s Flowers with Jesse Carmichael, Mickey Madden, and Ryan Dusick. Levine sang and played guitar.

The teenagers earned a record deal before they finished high school, but their first album did not find a large audience. The label dropped the band, and the young musicians paused to study and rethink their sound. Instead of treating the disappointment as the end, they listened to new kinds of music and prepared to try again.

Starting Again as Maroon 5

The friends reunited, added guitarist James Valentine, and became Maroon 5 in 2001. Their new music blended pop and rock with rhythms influenced by funk and R&B. Levine served as lead singer, rhythm guitarist, and a main songwriter, but the recordings depended on the whole band working together.

Maroon 5 released Songs About Jane on June 25, 2002. The album eventually reached number six on the Billboard 200 and produced songs including “Harder to Breathe,” “This Love,” and “She Will Be Loved.” In February 2005, the band won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. “This Love” brought another Grammy the following year.

More Songs, Awards, and Listeners

Maroon 5 followed its debut with It Won’t Be Soon Before Long in 2007. Its song “Makes Me Wonder” won a Grammy for best pop performance by a group in 2008. The band kept adjusting its sound as pop music changed, combining guitars, keyboards, electronic production, and Levine’s high, recognizable singing voice.

In 2011, “Moves Like Jagger,” recorded with Christina Aguilera, became another major hit. The Recording Academy lists three Grammy wins and thirteen nominations for Maroon 5. Those honors belong to a group effort: Levine may stand at the front of the stage, but bandmates, songwriters, producers, and touring crews all help turn an idea into a performance.

Sharing Music on Screen and Stage

Also in 2011, Levine became one of the first coaches on NBC’s The Voice. He helped singers prepare songs, make choices, and perform under pressure, and three contestants from his teams had won the competition by 2017. Television showed audiences a different part of his work: not only singing himself, but listening and giving practical advice to developing performers.

Levine also acted in the 2013 film Begin Again and performed “Lost Stars” for its soundtrack. In February 2017, he received the 2,601st star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording. He later returned to The Voice for its 2025 season while continuing to perform with Maroon 5.

Adam Levine’s career grew from a school band that failed on its first try into decades of records, concerts, and television. His story does not mean every setback leads to fame. It does show that creative work can change through practice, collaboration, and a willingness to begin again.
