Behind the panels
Reading time: about 8–10 minutes, including the illustrations.
William Shakespeare (1564–1616) built a working life as an actor, playwright, poet and theatre shareholder. Follow his journey from Stratford to London, the Globe, the King’s Men and the colleagues who preserved his plays.
Notes and sources
Illustrations reconstruct historical settings and sometimes use symbolic scenes. Documents and book pages are interpretive illustrations, not facsimiles. Play scenes are shown as performances; literary characters and speakers are not treated as direct autobiography. Dates of composition are approximate.
