## Behind the Panels

This original illustrated account follows Wangari Maathai from her Kenyan childhood through science, community tree planting and public advocacy. The artwork is AI-generated. Scenes interpret historical events and representative activities; they are not documentary photographs. No dialogue has been invented.

The Green Belt Movement was a collective achievement. Rural women identified urgent needs, developed practical skills, nurtured seedlings and organized with their neighbors. Maathai's leadership belongs within that shared work.

### Historical notes

The Uhuru Park tower campaign beginning in 1989, the political-prisoner vigil in 1992 and the Karura Forest campaign in 1999 were distinct events. The peaceful Karura planting demonstration attacked on 8 January 1999 should not be confused with later student clashes. Tree totals vary across sources and years, so this story avoids presenting a precise cumulative count.
