## Behind the Panels

This is an original AI-illustrated interpretation of the Sun Tzu tradition, not a documented cradle-to-grave biography. Sun Wu's appearance, the apprentice, teaching scenes and dialogue are imagined. Speech balloons are not verified quotations. Historical settings and the excavation are illustrative reconstructions, not documentary images.

- **A disputed life.** Tradition places Sun Wu in the state of Wu around 500 BCE. Sima Qian wrote centuries later. His account of King Helü and the palace women is a later narrative, not independently verified testimony. The executions are acknowledged critically, not celebrated. [Cambridge: the biographical tradition](https://assets.cambridge.org/97811088/30652/excerpt/9781108830652_excerpt.pdf)
- **A text with a history.** The received *Art of War* has thirteen chapters. Its formation, dating and authorship remain debated; scholarship includes theories of later compilation and development by multiple contributors. [Wiley: Sun Zi](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/9781444338232.wbeow613) · [Cambridge: historical and textual background](https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/three-faces-of-sun-tzu/background-historical-and-textual/A73F375D8A28B97EDB6277495D663D1A)
- **Ideas, not quotations.** The lessons about campaign costs, assessment, terrain, adaptation and intelligence are original summaries of themes in the text. Its preference for avoiding costly battle does not make it a pacifist work. [Read the text: Lionel Giles's 1910 translation](https://www.gutenberg.org/files/132/132-h/132-h.htm)
- **What archaeology shows.** The 1972 Yinqueshan finds included early Han manuscripts associated with Sunzi and the distinct Sun Bin tradition. They illuminate ancient transmission, not proof of every claim about Sun Wu. Sun Bin's life and campaigns are not Sun Wu's biography.
