## Behind the Panels

**20 illustrated pages · Estimated reading time: 8–10 minutes.**

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a poet, dramatist, thinker and Hieronymite nun in colonial New Spain. This selective biography follows her pursuit of learning, the networks that helped her writing circulate, and the limits placed on women's intellectual lives.

### Dates, recollections and uncertainty

Her birth year remains debated: 1648 and 1651 both appear in scholarship. She was born in San Miguel Nepantla, in what is now Mexico. Childhood reading and university aspirations come largely from her later autobiographical account. The illustrated childhood scenes reconstruct those recollections rather than claiming direct documentary access.

She professed at San Jerónimo in 1669 after a short Carmelite stay. Convent life combined worship and practical responsibilities with scholarship, correspondence and patronage. Her decision should not be reduced to a single modern motive.

María Luisa Manrique de Lara, Countess of Paredes and vicereine, was a crucial patron. The poetry collection *Inundación castálida* appeared in Madrid in 1689. *Primero sueño* appeared in a collected volume in 1692; its placement here introduces the intellectual project, not a claim that it was published before the controversy of 1690. Its dream sequence is explicitly literary imagery.

The Bishop of Puebla, Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz, published her critique of a sermon by António Vieira as *Carta atenagórica* in 1690. He also wrote under the pseudonym “Sor Filotea de la Cruz.” Sor Filotea was not another nun. Sor Juana's *Respuesta*, dated March 1, 1691, was first printed in 1700, after her death.

The circumstances and motives of her withdrawal from much public literary activity in her final years remain debated. This chapter does not invent a book-burning, trial or final coercive confrontation. She died on April 17, 1695. Early accounts describe her care for ill convent sisters, but the exact medical circumstances and parts of that narrative have been questioned; no pathogen is identified here.

### About the illustrations

These are original AI-generated historical reconstructions, not documentary images. Narration is researched paraphrase, not verified dialogue. Faces, rooms and private scenes are interpretive. The kitchen scene illustrates her discussion of learning through everyday observation, not a modern experiment attributed to her.
