## Behind the Panels

**Reading time:** about 6 minutes. Mary Anning (1799–1847) was a fossil collector and expert whose work on the Dorset coast helped scientists investigate extinct life. This 20-page illustrated biography follows her family’s work, major discoveries, practical expertise and uneven recognition.

Joseph Anning found the skull in 1811; Mary subsequently excavated more of the ichthyosaur skeleton. The specimen was incomplete. The plesiosaur and pterosaur shown later belong to different reptile groups: none of these animals was a dinosaur. The prehistoric-life panels are interpretive reconstructions, separate from scenes of Mary’s lifetime.

The Geological Society excluded women from membership during her lifetime, but her story also includes scientific friendships and financial help. Her expertise was valued even when credit and opportunity were unequal. We avoid the unsupported claim that she was universally ignored, and omit popular anecdotes whose historical foundations are uncertain.

**Image disclosure:** All pages are original AI-generated historical illustrations, including the opening manga poster used as the featured and post-list image. Faces, settings, fossil arrangements and gestures are interpretive, not documentary evidence or specimen facsimiles. No invented speech is presented as a quotation. The portrait poster is preserved in full rather than replaced with different artwork.
