# Ibn al-Haytham: Questions in the Light

From Basra to Cairo, Ibn al-Haytham investigates light, challenges inherited explanations of sight and leaves an optical legacy built on questions, geometry and evidence.

## Behind the Panels

This original illustrated biography follows Ibn al-Haytham’s optical inquiry rather than treating an uncertain life story as a documented adventure. The artwork is AI-generated, and his appearance is an imagined reconstruction. The study scenes and demonstrations are illustrative, not records of particular days or eyewitness events. All narration is original; no line is presented as a verified quotation.

Ibn al-Haytham lived approximately 965–1040 and worked in Iraq and Egypt. Accounts of his relationship with the Fatimid ruler al-Hakim, the Nile project and supposed confinement differ. Those anecdotes are not the foundation of this chapter. Dates assigned to the composition and Latin translation of the *Book of Optics* also vary, so the story avoids an unsupported exact year.

His achievement joined physical investigation, geometrical reasoning and the study of perception. It did not amount to a complete modern theory of the eye. The dark-chamber panels illustrate paths of light; they do not claim that he understood the eye as a modern camera or that he alone invented the camera obscura or the scientific method. Coral lines are explanatory marks, not a claim that light rays are normally visible in clean air. The concluding modern classroom is a contemporary illustration, not a documented historical event.
