## Behind the Panels

This original AI-illustrated story follows traditions about Confucius, not a recoverable eyewitness biography. His appearance, conversations and composite teaching scenes are imagined; speech balloons are not verified quotations. The traditional dates are 551–479 BCE. Details of his offices, travels and early life differ across sources.

- **A teacher, not the author of this finished book.** Kong Qiu, or Master Kong, lived in Lu in the late Zhou world. The *Analects* preserves sayings and encounters attributed to him and his circle, collected and developed after his lifetime. [Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy: Confucius](https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/confucius/)
- **Practice before prestige.** The chapter’s lessons about *ren* (humaneness), *li* (ritual and proper conduct), learning and exemplary government are original summaries, not quotations. Family, ancestors and Heaven belonged to this moral world; it was not simply a modern secular philosophy. [Columbia: humaneness](https://afe.easia.columbia.edu/main_pop/ps/ps_china-confucius-humaneness.htm) · [government](https://afe.easia.columbia.edu/main_pop/ps/ps_china-confucius-govt.htm) · [the teacher](https://afe.easia.columbia.edu/main_pop/ps/ps_china-confucius-teacher.htm)
- **An inheritance to examine.** Humane ideals coexisted with unequal social roles. The final page identifies a disparaging passage about women and servants in the transmitted *Analects* (17.25), rather than inventing a witnessed exchange. Later Confucian traditions are varied and should not all be attributed directly to one man. [Columbia: the passage and its context](https://afe.easia.columbia.edu/main_pop/ps/ps_china-confucius-women-servants.htm)
- **Reconstructing the setting.** The artwork uses interpreted ancient robes, timber buildings, bronze vessels and bamboo-strip manuscripts. These are illustrative reconstructions, not documentary images.
