# Albert Einstein: The Boy Who Chased Light

A compass sparks Einstein’s curiosity. Follow his questions through the Bern patent office, the bending of spacetime, exile and the burdens of scientific fame.

## Behind the Panels

### A true life, an imagined telling

The conversations, inner thoughts, and scene details are imagined, not transcripts. The dates and scientific ideas are grounded in the references below. Journeys inside beams, atoms and curved grids are explanatory metaphors. Buildings, clothing and supporting characters are interpretive reconstructions rather than archival likenesses.

- **The compass.** Einstein later recalled being fascinated by a compass when he was four or five. This scene follows a childhood memory recorded much later, not a surviving eyewitness account. [Princeton University Press: Einstein's recollection](https://assets.press.princeton.edu/chapters/s10176.pdf)
- **Not a failed mathematician.** He was strong in mathematics. An unsuccessful overall entrance examination in 1895 led to a year at Aarau before he entered the Zürich Polytechnic. [AIP: school years](https://history.aip.org/exhibits/einstein/early1.htm) · [ETH Library: youth](https://library.ethz.ch/sammlungen-und-archive/online-zugaenge/einstein-online/jugend-1879-1896.html)
- **The boy who chased light.** Einstein remembered imagining this puzzle at sixteen. Its precise role in his later discovery is more complicated than a single flash of genius. [John D. Norton, University of Pittsburgh](https://sites.pitt.edu/~jdnorton/papers/Chasing.pdf)
- **People around the ideas.** Mileva Marić was a fellow physics student and his first wife, not simply a background character. Her exact scientific contribution remains debated. Einstein also discussed ideas with friends and colleagues. [ETH Zürich](https://einstein-school.ethz.ch/en/about-us/name-albert-einstein.html) · [Swiss patent office: Bern years](https://www.ige.ch/en/about-us/the-history-of-the-ipi/einstein/einstein-in-bern)
- **The remarkable year.** The four landmark papers of 1905 addressed light quanta, Brownian motion, special relativity, and mass–energy equivalence. These were not his only writings that year. [Library of Congress: the papers](https://guides.loc.gov/einstein-annus-mirabilis/1905-papers)
- **Clocks and viewpoints.** A clock moving relative to an inertial observer ticks more slowly in that observer's description. The clock is not broken, and a person beside it experiences ordinary local time. [Einstein Online: light clocks](https://www.einstein-online.info/en/spotlight/light-clocks-time-dilation/)
- **The famous equation.** E = mc² relates rest energy and mass. It is not a blueprint for a nuclear weapon. [Einstein Online: mass and energy](https://www.einstein-online.info/en/spotlight/atombombe/)
- **Gravity, locally.** Free fall gives the feeling of weightlessness. The equivalence principle applies locally; tidal effects prevent extending this simple picture everywhere. [Einstein Online: the falling elevator](https://www.einstein-online.info/en/spotlight/equivalence_principle/)
- **1915, then 1919.** Einstein completed his gravitational field equations in November 1915. Four years later, expeditions to Príncipe and Sobral found evidence supporting his prediction of bent starlight. Difficult measurements were a test, not final proof of every part of the theory. [Max Planck: the 1915 paper](https://einstein-virtuell.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de/VEA/SC854034901_MOD1479463207_SEQ923184502_SL2034834684_en.html) · [Royal Society: the eclipse](https://royalsociety.org/blog/2024/08/observing-relativity/)
- **The Nobel distinction.** His 1921 Nobel Prize was awarded in 1922, especially for the law of the photoelectric effect, not for relativity. [Nobel Prize](https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/physics/1921/summary/)
- **Exile and responsibility.** Einstein settled in the United States in 1933 after the Nazi rise to power. He signed the 1939 warning letter to Roosevelt but did not work on the Manhattan Project. [AIP: exile](https://history.aip.org/exhibits/einstein/public2_text.htm) · [FDR Library: the letter](https://fdr.blogs.archives.gov/2011/10/13/found-in-the-archives-15/) · [National Park Service](https://www.nps.gov/people/manhattan-project-pioneers-albert-einstein.htm)
- **Beyond the blackboard.** At Lincoln University in 1946, Einstein spoke against racial segregation. He died in Princeton on 18 April 1955, aged 76. [Lincoln University magazine](https://www.lincoln.edu/_files/langston-hughes-memorial-library/Lincoln%20Lion%20Magazine%20Archives/LincolnLion-Fall_Winter2013-4.pdf) · [IAS archival photograph](https://albert.ias.edu/entities/archivalmaterial/5bbe3f92-b5db-4aed-88f1-d3deb09127c7) · [National Park Service: life dates](https://www.nps.gov/people/manhattan-project-pioneers-albert-einstein.htm)

**The takeaway:** Curiosity matters, but so do study, evidence, collaboration and the courage to revise an idea.
