Abu Rayhan al-Biruni (born 973) worked across astronomy, mathematics, geography, comparative calendars, the study of India, minerals and medicinal substances. His intellectual life crossed courts and languages, but also political upheaval and forced relocation. This chapter follows selected episodes rather than every journey or work. The illustrations reconstruct historical settings and people, not documentary scenes or authenticated portraits. Al-Biruni’s exact appearance is unknown. Teachers, readers and helpers are shown interpretively, and manuscript motifs are explanatory artwork rather than facsimiles. The narration is original paraphrase, not a collection of quotations. ### What we know, and what remains uncertain - His birth year is given as 973. His exact death date is disputed; specialist accounts place it around or after 1050, so this story does not treat the often-repeated 1048 as certain. - His move to Ghazni followed Mahmud’s conquest of Khwarazm in 1017 and was compelled. His later contact with Indian scholarship took place within the context of Ghaznavid expansion, not an uncomplicated sightseeing journey. - Al-Biruni learned Sanskrit and worked with learned Hindu interlocutors. His *India*, completed in 1030, combined careful comparison with his own theological judgments and limited sources. It does not represent every community or belief in India. - The mountain method relates a peak’s height and the small downward angle to a distant horizon to Earth’s radius. Nandana is inland in the Salt Range of present-day Pakistan. Al-Biruni did not discover that Earth was round. Instrument precision, atmospheric refraction, historical units and reported calculations make popular claims of near-perfect modern accuracy unreliable. - The 997 eclipse page describes the purpose of coordinated observation, not a claim of a perfectly successful longitude result.
