## Behind the Panels

This original AI-illustrated chapter retells Greek myth, not a verified life of a historical person. Events are condensed from Homer’s *Iliad*; dialogue, faces, costumes and visual staging are imagined. The artwork evokes an ancient Aegean world without claiming archaeological reconstruction.

- **Wrath has victims.** The dispute over captive Briseis, Achilles’ withdrawal and the failed embassy are adapted from Books 1 and 9. Briseis is a person deprived of freedom, not an uncomplicated romantic prize. [Book 1](https://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad1.html) · [Book 9](https://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad9.html)
- **Gods shape the action.** Apollo and Euphorbus disable and wound Patroclus before Hector’s fatal attack. Athena deceives Hector before his last stand. The shield made by Hephaestus surrounds warfare with images of ordinary life. [Book 16](https://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad16.html) · [Book 18](https://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad18.html) · [Book 22](https://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad22.html)
- **A pause, not peace.** Priam and Achilles share grief, food and an agreement allowing Hector’s burial. Their encounter does not end the war or erase earlier cruelty. The *Iliad* ends with Hector’s funeral; Achilles remains alive. [Book 24](https://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerIliad24.html)
- **One poem, many traditions.** Achilles’ death and the familiar vulnerable-heel story belong to other strands of the tradition and are not narrated here. Patroclus is his beloved companion; interpretations of their relationship vary. Source editions linked above include A. T. Murray’s translation of the *Iliad*. Our speech balloons are original adaptation, not quotations from that translation.
